Toshiba 3D TV 2012 still pushing the Glasses Free 3D envelope
Phil Conner
Toshiba was the first manufacturer to show 3D TVs without the glasses last year and now they are the first to enter the marketplace with one for sale. They have just created and distributed in Japan a monster new development with a 55 inch glasses free television.
It of course runs off LED backlighting and has 4K resolution (4096X3112 or similar). The TV generates the 3D image with face tracking systems and software. We viewed Toshiba's glasses free 3D TVs at CES last year with mixed results. Certainly there is a "right" area to view the TV in in order to properly see the image in 3D. Otherwise, the picture can be blurry from off center.
With the new autostereoscopic 3D TV we'll be interested to see if there is a big improvement over what we saw last year. The new processor called the Cevo Duo processor is also one we'll enjoy reviewing. It is based on the Cell processor that Toshiba introduced in 2009 but have not introduced many models with.
So how much is this fancy new 3D technology? Try the yen equivalent of $11,000. I dont know about you, but I think I may just prefer to wear the glasses...
