Edge Lit LED TV performance on the UN55D7000 LED LCD TV

by Jack Burden, 8/20/2011

The Samsung D7000 uses LED Edge LightingScreen uniformity issues have been plaguing LED TVs, especially those of the Edge Lit variety and this is no different in the UN55D7000 series by Samsung. Many reviews we've read state this issues and crippling but our reviewers beg to differ. The UN55D7000 has extremely powerful LED backlighting capabilities. The standard settings on the TV are much higher than what you actually need to use to enjoy the set. By turning the backlight setting on the TV down to 60 or below, you can virtually eliminate the screen uniformity issues.

We noticed the screen uniformity problems during testing. But it's the reviewers responsibility to find the best setting for each TV and so we resolved to test at different LED backlight levels. Just because Samsung provides such stellar light output on the D7000 doesnt mean you have to use it all. In fact, higher backlight settings should only be used when the room you are in has extreme ambient light coming in from windows. In this case you will not notice the edges being lighter than the other parts of the picture due the surrounding light.

What we recommend with the UN55D7000 TV is first following our recommended published picture settings. Then adjust only the backlight setting as needed depending upon room light. This will yield a picture that displays the best traits of this TV - incredible picture depth and contrast.
